Mackenzie Scott and her little brother Riley had lived most of their lives without the slightest notion another world even existed. All the while, these creatures had been watching their world die. It didn’t matter how it had happened, it didn’t matter that Mackenzie hadn’t known. It only mattered that she was here now, and she was the one person responsible for this realm.

She missed Hunter terribly, and it was not just the call of his energy to hers. She was alone here, so out of her element that she was actually not even of the same world. Mentally, anyway, because it felt like her physical side was catching up pretty damn fast. She held her hand up, turning her palm and shifting her fingers. When she’d first come to this realm, she’d felt the change. She’d been in shock, in denial, but she’d felt the energy inside of her right away. Not this strong, because Hunter had not bestowed upon her the gift that came with being his queen, but different, and no less life-changing. Everything had felt more, even when they’d returned to her home world. The earth, the wind, the very sight of the clouds she’d always watched was more real than it had ever been.

In those first few hours, Mackenzie had felt the draw to Hunter too. When he touched her, she could feel the energy of it beneath her skin. Like it was feeding her. Like he was the warmth of the sun. Like safety.

Hunter had immediately, and then irreparably, become her universe. It had terrified her. And then he’d left her.

Somehow, that made things less terrifying. Not because she had wanted him to leave or preferred being in a strange world without his help, but because she’d still felt the draw. She’d known it was separable. She couldn’t say how much of her decision to leap through the gateway the second time was her own. Hunter had warned her how it would feel, that it would be overwhelming, uncontrollable. They’d stood in her narrow kitchen hours before the reaping, pressing skin to skin, his fingertips trailing over her arms, her neck, the bone that centered her chest where she was supposed to tie those tethers beneath. At the time, she’d barely been able to stop thinking of their first few kisses, the way his lips had felt, the soft heat of him, of how her senses ached to do it again. It was sweet, and tingly, and anticipation mixed with fear.

The pull to the gateway was nothing of the sort. It was painful, and engulfing, and it swore devastation if it was ignored, fulfillment if obeyed.
